Crack Path and Liquid Metal Embrittlement Specificity of Austenitic Steels in Mercury at Room Temperature

چکیده
A liquid metal embrittlement specificity of three austenitic steels with increasing nickel content (304L, 316L and 316L(N)) is studied in mercury. Only the low alloys are susceptible to LME. The crack path an steel fracture induced by mercury has been elucidated. Deformation martensite (γ → α’) induces numerous α’/α’ interfaces at small scale that be embrittled. Because only resists LME one shows stability over a’ phase change due mostly its higher content, a point confirmed X Ray fractography, it inferred major factor contributing sensitivity room temperature α’ formation unstable during plastic strain. This provides sound rationale on how prevent steels.

متن کاملLow-Temperature Carburization of Austenitic Stainless Steels
LOW-TEMPERATURE CARBURIZATION is a gaseous carburization process performed at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures where the kinetics of substitutional diffusion are very slow. Low-temperature carburization hardens the surface of austenitic stainless steels through the diffusion of interstitial carbon, without the formation of carbides. The surface must be activated, by modification and remova...

متن کاملPrevention of Hydrogen Embrittlement in Steels
The essential facts about the nature of the hydrogen embrittlement of steels have now been known for 140 years. It is diffusible hydrogen that is harmful to the toughness of iron. It follows, therefore, that the harmful influence of diffusible hydrogen can be mitigated by preventing its entry into steel or by rendering it immobile once it penetrates the material. This review deals with the meth...
متن کاملTransient liquid phase bonding of AISI 304L stainless steels with the austenitic and martensitic microstructures
In the present study, the effect of time and base metal microstructure on the Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) bonding of 304L stainless steel was studied. TLP was performed at 1050 0C for 5 and 60 minutes on the coarse grain austenitic and martensitic microstructure using BNi-2 interlayer. To prepare martensitic microstructure, as-received 304L was rolled at -15 0C up to 80% rolling reduction. TEM...
